Where are you in your Journey?

Everyone I’ve talked to recently about getting into hobby board games seems to have a similar starting point. I could discuss what that Journey looks like, but I think Paula Denning and Shelfside do a much better job of adding comedic relief to said journey.

I got a few gameplays in last week with Devin from Picking Up Pieces, which sparked today’s blog topic. We talked casually about games we’ve been playing recently and the games we were excited to come out. That’s when I realized that I was almost conversing with a past version of myself.

Devin seemed so excited and energized to discuss upcoming games he was looking forward to backing and had a list of games he was looking forward to trying soon. I, on the other hand, only had two titles that came to mind that I was looking forward to. I felt shocked at my realization because if he asked me the same question a year ago, I probably could have spent half an hour rattling off different games on my want-to-play list.

After we finished gaming, I reflected briefly on why my want-to-play list had dwindled. According to BG Stats, I’ve logged over 350 different games played. That gives me a good base knowledge of what game elements excite me. It also allows me to evaluate games quicker when they come on my radar. These days when I see a new game come across my feed, I evaluate it based on the following criteria:

  • Does it play well at 2?

  • Is the gameplay streamlined?

  • Does it play less than 2 hours?

  • Is it different than anything in our collection?

  • Will it still feel fresh after three plays?

If any of these questions get answered with a “no,” the game usually gets forgotten. If all questions get a resounding yes, My excitement behind the game could best be described as giddy!

To sign off today, I’ll leave you with three games I’m giddy to get my hands on.
